

Lou Sherman was born on Dec. 25, 1927 in Pine Plaines, New York. He was
brought up in a series of orphanages in the area, until 1944 when he joined
the Army. Lou was based in Germany with the Army Occupation and was honorably
discharged with the rank of Sergeant in 1946.
He spent the next year working in New York City before coming to the Chicago
area where he visited a former house parent, who was then head of Glenwood
School for Boys. Lou accepted a job offer there and spent the next 10 years
at the school, working in the Dean’s Office, as a house parent and
helping run the dining hall. In 1957, Lou took a job with I.T.T. Continental and stayed with the company
as a route salesman until he retired in 1985. He moved to Steger in 1958
and became a member of the Steger Kiwanis Club and head of its Boy’s
baseball League
In 1973, Lou ran and won his first term as Steger Village President. In May,
he will complete his eighth term. During his years as mayor, Lou has served
not only the village but also as president of the South Suburban Mayors and
Managers, head of the organization’s transportation committee, and
a member of the Chicago Area Transportation Study.
He holds volunteer positions at the county and state level, being appointed
to the Cook County Community Block Grant advisory board in 1977 and as a
vice president of the Illinois Municipal League in 1994
Lou and his wife Andrea, are members of
St. Liborius Church. He is a former Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor and a life
member of the organization as well as three time president of the local Kiwanis
Club. He is a member of the Steger DARE committtee, the Chamber of Commerce
and the American Legion.
